I think maybe one of the daughters died at birth so the next daughter just got her name, I do remember hearing something about this.

It certainly looks very different now to the photos above. I visited this last week.
Local man John Houston mows the grass and cares for the graves. Lions have done some good groundwork but John was there working away when I visited.
The WDC recently tried to ‘close’ the Cemetery but Heritage Hokitika objected. So it is still officially open. Hopefully with the development that has happened more graves will be made available in the future.
All of the work done is voluntary.

Tony Warner One of their reasons was to avoid ‘ongoing cost of upkeep’ but they hadn’t done any upkeep.

Child mortality was high and it was quite common for parents to rename their new child after the lost one. That could the answer to your comment P.S. many children did not have access to vaccinations at the time..
