Helen Dodge yes recall having to stop as vehicles got stuck and my Nan saying the rosary in the back seat very loudly.

Having a chuckle, remembering when a road trip down the Coast was a real adventure, and done in very ordinary cars on seriously ordinary roads.

I reckon Alec…..recall the first WC trip was in 1963 from Nelson to Reefton in the back of a horse float truck with two horses…..upper Buller Gorge through the Lyell was a three rut unsealed road….and about a 200m reverse ride when meeting a bus or coal truck coming the other way…..a huge adventure…..and very memorable…..glad I saw and experienced it!

Steve Voice Keith does say it was being drilled and blasted at the time. It would look different now as a result of the blasting maybe

Looks like Hawks Crag to me.

One is Hawks Crag , the other 2 are fern arch I think , when this was being blasted a some tourists were passing thru and a mix up in traffic control missed them and they were blasted off the road. I think they all survived.

Yes you are right , slip up of the old memory.

I believe photos 2 & 3 are Little Hawks Crag which was several hundred metres toward Inangahua from Ohikaiti bridge. The blasting accident involving the tourists was at Stitts Bluff not fern arch
