About this image
DescriptionThe D B Westland hotel, Hokitika. That was its name in 1993, but is probably called by a different name now.
I stayed a night here, and went to dinner in the huge dining room. I was the only one there, and it was a strange experience.

Alan Johnson
Richard, I managed there in the early 1980,S following the birth of my Daughter in Greymouth before returning to The DB Haast for a further 4 years Managing. You cant beat the West Coast characters for their Joviality and story telling (some times a little far fetched) but what the hell Great times and memories of the West Coast Hospitality Industry. I could probably write a book on my experiences but doubt they would publish it ..lol ...Keep the pics coming

Alan Johnson Hi Alan. Denis and I worked with you many years ago. The pub has changed a bit!
Richard Howe
Alan Johnson I love the West Coast Alan, and the people i got to know, especially the oldies who had lived there forever. Some really interesting things were told to me. Even though i was what they called a " Loopy " from the east coast. Lol.
Alan Johnson
I was born and bred in Westport Richard so I can relate to all that, however One special guest whilst in Haast was Prince Edward which no one new about except Roger Millard The then cop in Haast) and my then wife Mary and what a wonderful time he had down there with the exception following dinner he asked for A lion Beer but was told he was not allowed to swear in the House bar as such. He left the following morning heading South all full of Whitebait etc and thanked us profusely for the hospitality and also asked in is letter of thanks to us for the good time but couldnt understand what silly card game we were playing outside his room..He came out periodically to see who was wining and from memory it may have been Stan Dawson did etter a ice letter from him later on acknowledging his stay and said he loved it ...Margaret and Dennis, Where was that?..Trying to remember you both
Richard Howe
Alan Johnson I have fond memories of Westport, and the areas north Alan. Particularly Granity where i was allowed a small house to stay in. Right opposite the Millerton turnoff. The Westport area was my first foray into the West Coast, and i fell in love with it immediately. Rather sad that the sea has encroached on the town over the past few years, as some people may have to move away. That would be heartbreaking. I had my eye on a house there, but my job in Christchurch was the hold up. If i'd been retired, i would have taken it.
David Meech
