The bridge was there are a tourist attraction last time we went through. So we stopped and walked across. But drove over it many times in the years gone by.

My father worked on this bridge for years plus the old Hokitika bridge.
They used to paint all the rusted bolts (after wire brushing them) with Red Lead paint that weighed really heavy because of all the lead in it.
No masks used and My father was just one of the bridge workers who died of from cancer at age of 46.
Maybe it was from breathing all the lead in the paint and washing the paint off the brushes.
I know they were told not to breathe the dust fumes from sanding the bolts due to the lead in the paint.

Part of the old bridge is in a wee park on the left toward Hoki. Needs a good tidy up, rust is taking over. Coasters Club, any chance ?

i find it of interest that the post came from 'Richard Howe'. This truss design was patented by William Howe and used world wide including NZ check out the wiki article on Howe Truss bridges https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Howe_truss

Cedric Trounson Extremely interesting Cedric, but William Howe looked very severe, whereas i am a happy looking chap. Some years ago my elder brother started to trace our American lineage, but got involved in other things, and never finished it. There was an Elias Howe too who developed the sewing machine, but never patented it at the time. Mr. Singer realised this ,and made a fortune. A drawn out law case then ensued, and Singer had to pay Howe damages apparently.Les Holmes Germanicus
This is a timber Howe design truss bridge made of Jarra hardwood. They have kept a span as a visitor attraction.
