This photo was taken on 28 September 1904 outside the first Otira Terminus Hotel and was reproduced in the Weekly Press, credited to A P Smith who was the stationmaster at the time. Premier Richard John Seddon is on horseback at left. He was on a visit to the West Coast and that morning had ridden from Bealey to Otira, which took him about two hours. A good report of his journey appeared in the Star (Christchurch) 28 September 1904 p3. Meanwhile, the coach is ready for the trip over Arthur's Pass through to Springfield. In the background is the original engine shed.
