The bridge in the 1908 photo was replaced in 1909 by the one below. On 18 August 1909 the Greymouth Evening Star reported that the bridge was sufficiently finished to allow traffic to use it. "Bill" Clark, the driver of the mail coach, was the first to cross it and to informally declare it open to the public. The 1909 bridge was seen as a vast improvement on the old one, which was absolutely dangerous for wheeled traffic, with many narrow escapes having occurred. Known as the "top red bridge" for a number of years, the 1909 Wallace Point bridge was itself replaced in 1980. The attached photo was taken in 1937-38 when the steel towers were being erected in the Otira Gorge to carry the transmission lines from Lake Coleridge to Arahura.Date of Photo13 May 1908Map^[1]ContributorMaye Dunn
