DescriptionThe fatal accident at the Otia Tunnel, Midland Railway; Collapse of a sill at the Bealey Flat end;
The most seriously injured men, Charles Beemer, Alex Beard, George Pitts and Claude Bray were removed from Bealey Flat on Tuesday morning, en route for the Grey River Hospital. They were accompanied by the doctor and nurse and they also had the attention and assistance of mates, who were solicitous for their welfare.
It was a moving spectacle to see these men who a few hours previously, been in the prime of manhood and strength, being carried from their huts on stretchers and placed in the vehicles which had been improvised into ambulance wagons.
The little procession contained three vehicles, left Bealey Flat for Otira where the party joined the train which conveyed them to the Grey River Hospital.
