DescriptionFourteen people died when a viewing platform collapsed at Cave Creek in the Paparoa National Park on 28th April 1995. Students from the Greymouth Tai Poutini Polytechnic were visiting the park. The platform fell 30 metres into the chasm. Nails were used to secure the platform instead of bolts because a drill had not been taken to the building site. The step to the platform had not been properly attached. This was and still is so tragic. I'm no engineer or builder but the incompetence shown when building that viewing platform is astonishing. Not even an ounce of common sense was shown and the consequences of that was devastating.

We were on the rescue team, and although put on hold as the helicopter was able to keep flying and retrieving the students, it was a horrible sad day that I will never forget.
