The day of the flood we moved out of Otira, Dad was advised not to take the car over the gorge, far to rough, so we had to travel by goods train, in the Guards Van to Arthurs Pass and then drove to Christchurch and on to Timaru.

Les Holmes Germanicus- We were on a camping holiday in Hanmer and our tent got blown over, so we packed everything up into the old V8 and drove to Nelson. I still remember the huge waves crashing over the road as we were entering Nelson. The car got swamped but she kept going. What a huge storm that was.

Correct me if I'm wrong Rolly Parker had a Rolls Royce stored at the electrical substation it got washed down the river into lots of bits. He spent a lot of time recovering it and rebuilding it, never to be quite the same again

Travel through there was always an adventure in the 1950's. My brother worked in Hokitika so travelled through there quite regularly. Loved every trip, always domething different to see.

The old pub still looked the same in the 80's Many a drink had in that pub from 60's to 80's as I lived in Otira 3 different times.
