I have spent much time, from time to time, on the West Coast.
One time, with a mate, we drove in my fathers car, without his knowledge, to Westport to meet up with other mates who were there for horse races.
We arrived very late Saturday night and couldn't find them in the hotel they were supposed to be. The mate in the car said they would be at the pub (that I can't remember the name of, or location) just out of town. We drove into the car park and the pub was lit up like a christmas tree with music flooding the air waves. We knew they were there as so were their cars.
So, we get to the pub door and remembering this is 6 o'clock closing, and give it a good knock to be heard over the music indoors. The door is opened, much to our surprise, by the local constable who invites us in after asking us who we were and why we were there. As we didn't have accommodation he and his dear lady put us up for the night on camp streachers. In the morning fed us bacon and eggs, in bed ready for the drive back to ChCh.
Now thats West Coast hospitality for you.
On the trip home the car broke down so we left it on the side of the road and other mates took us the rest of the way.
My father, not impressed, was mostly concerned I was OK, bless him.
My brother and I went the next night, to get the car, that started first time and drove home. I think it was just tired at the time.Rene van der Jagt
