Yes. I did not realise there used to be a rail car to/from Arthur's Pass. No public transport between Greymouth and Hokitika I gather. This is basic stuff. Hard to understand in this day and age. Here in Tauranga there used to be a train service to Hamilton long gone.

Why did they not visit Hokitika? Especially considering they named it after a Hokitika goldfield

Kae Lewis Perhaps the river bar was too shallow for it.

Kae Lewis It was named after the river. Humphries Gully was the original goldfeild Arahura was dredged much later

The port at Hokitika with it's dangerous bar was not suitable for a ship of the Arahura's size.
