I'm the grandson (James Mark Anthony) of Albert Henry Spark who was born in Clunes Victoria on 19th June 1887. He followed his brother to the West Coast and initially worked in the quartz mines around Reefton and at Waiuta before moving to Rewanui (Siberia by the Sea) where he met and married Hannah Beale Campbell daughter of James (Scotty) and Mary Jane Campbell. The Campbell family emigrated from Newcastle on Tyne in 1905 and there were four daughters Hilda, Hannah, Flora and Marion. Albert and Hannah Spark had four children Albert (Bert), Lola, Leone and Norma. Albert Spark started the Spark and Party Mine at Rewanui and also was in the 1st Battalion Auckland Infantry during WW1. Bert Spark was a barber and the town bookie in Runanga and married Seena Dowell. They owned The Dobson Hotel, Methven Hotel, Red Lion Hotel Rangiora and the Woodend Hotel. Bert saw action in WW11 in Italy. In family records there is no mention of any association with South Africa and I'm wondering if Rollerston is being mixed up with Rangiora?
