Here's the respective teams. North Island (basically Auckland + a Wellington player) won 55-2.

Paul Buchanan Yep. Also John Anderson who was playing in Auckland and picked for the NZ team was originally from the West Coast.

This is from a game v AKL in 1938 after they'd returned. 14, 28 maybe, and 23.

NOT the 1938 team. It is the 1939 South Island team. Captain Rex King (Canterbury) had been a rugby union star before switching to RL with Warrington (GB). He returned to NZ and played only the 1939 season, captaining the Kiwis on their two-match tour to Britain before War was declared. Chang Newton played the first of his 9 inter-island games in 1939. Ces Mountford (far right) also debuted in 1939. North won 35-13.

Lyn N Moe Too many photos are wrongly dated. King, Newton and Mountford did not play in 1938. I can't name them all but Ces Davison (balding), John Clark (sixth from front) and Bill Glynn played both 1938 and 1939.

Agree it looks like Bill. But Bill didn't play for South Island until 1945 (when Ces and Ken were also in the team).
