Boxing Day was always Hokitika Sports Day.

First cab off the rank Mawheraiti. Ray (sailor) Hill and the indomitable Unle Kath his wife how good were those days.Apo the Maori shearer, the Gilsenan bros both Led and Dan their Mum Hinemoa egging from the side lines and so many others. Makes an old man feel very humble to have grown up and experienced this marvellous era. Kevin O'Regan

Looking at that list we sure did travel a lot when we were children watching Dad chopping. Great times.

There was a lot of chopping in those days and what great little communities rallied to support the events. Remember Jim O'Malley calling the numbers from his old Chev truck, and all the trigger wires going to the back of the cab in case of close finishes. Brilliant era.
