Yes, the shop part has gone. Here is another photo. The big sheds at the back on the left made a magic place for a child, and the yard was great for walking round on empty forty-four gallon drums. Great fun.Map[1] ContributorMary Moffitt

You can see the peak of the Stillwater School roof, the place of many great childhood memories, just above the terrace to the left, between the big trees. It was right next door for many children since it was placed right in the centre of the community.
From that school you could see the hills in all directions and right down the Grey Valley as far as the Kiwi Tunnel.
Kevin Oregan
That's an oldie! Look at the petrol pumps selling leaded. The Austin truck would be nice to have now. Kevin
Mary Moffitt
Kevin Oregan I think that this was about the time Caltex added Boron to the fuel. I have been trying to find out the actual date they first did this. Do you have any idea. It could have been around 1957???
Kevin Oregan
Mary, I are sure younger brother Roger will answer your question during the day as he follows my posts. His first job after leaving school was with Caltex. I have been trying to find the date of the truck. Your 1957 would be around the mark. From that spot iyou looked down the hill to what was Tom Crofts depot. Thanks Kevin
Mary Moffitt
Kevin Oregan Thank you. I have looked up Caltex records to find out about Boron, because we have a photo showing a few flags celebrating Boron’s first birthday. Couldn’t find an exact date tho. Those flags in the pic may be remnants of the celebration. Crofts were, and still are important to Stillwater. Lovely people. My father was great friends with Tom, so much so that Tom went to Gore with Cliff in 1944 when his father died. They did a lot of boxing together, but Tom was the champion in a heavier class.
Mary Moffitt
Kevin Oregan The truck was bought new some years before 1957. I mentioned my reason for in Grant’s reply.
Kevin Oregan
Copy. Great photo. I used to operate Langridges TD24 bulldozer for a number of years including river work and stopbanks plus a few bush roads throughout the Grey valley. Became a great friend of Barfie Ord, Eddie himself and Bernie Gallagan (spell check the last one "cruncher"). Before moving to Whataroa in 1970. But the petrol pump you are showing we used to fill our motorbikes. Thank you for input. Kevin
Grant Taylor
The yellow number plate worn by the truck dates the photo to the 1961/66 period. These K series Austin trucks were built between 1949 and 1955.
Kevin Oregan
Thanks Grant. I never go by the number plate. And yes definetly K series.
Grant Taylor
Kevin Oregan The number plates are a valuable resource for researchers when dating some photos, especially between 1925 and 1941 when the plates were changed annually.
Kevin Oregan
Of course Grant. Was forgetting the new plates every year back in the day. Kevin
Mary Moffitt
Grant Taylor The truck was brand new when purchased. Our tennis team was carted up and down the valley for some years in it, and those years had to be before the end of 1957, when I left school. Think 1949 too early, but maybe not much later.
Roger O'Regan
Kevin is right. My first job was at Caltex in 1961 and Boron was added to the raw fuel whilst in the tank trucks. We held drums of the stuff in the Caltex yard.
In about 1965 I worked for a building company as a driver/labourer (prior to doing an adult apprenticeship with the) and they gave me a 'new' truck........an Austin Loadstar like this. It's very worst feature was it has no left turn steering lock. Had to have two goes at a normal intersection in ChCh. Good truck though, and a huge improvement over the Morris 4 cylinder side valve, 1938!
Mary Moffitt
Roger O'Regan Thank you. 1961 is a date I looked at hard. I found that Boron was indeed innovative - if I have understood the science correctly, and is still used. I am not brave enough to describe what it does - in case I do not get it right. Can’t help it. Is it some sort of cleanser?
Mary Moffitt
Now this bunting does celebrate Boron’s first birthday. Big-time decoration for a NZ country store at the time. It must have been a big thing for Caltex.

I recall your dad Driving to each house in Stillwater so the housewife could do her shopping from the truck.
Tony Kokshoorn
During the 1960,s Cliff sold all sorts of stuff from that truck once a week when he drove to Ruru and beyond. We loved the service.
Anna Wright
He used to come to Kaimata - I remember so well looking at the lollies but couldn’t afford them. Love the truck. Great memories.

Great memories of Mr. Cliff Moffat. Used to see him once a week on his very welcome grocery visits to Kotuku. Always so nice to all the kids, and parents of course, who had waited for him on his weekly visits with all the goodies.
Noeline Pinn
I am sure this was much earlier than the 60’s. Mr Moffat came to Kotuku as early as 1939 and into the early 40’s.
Robin McKenzie
I used yo buy treats from Moffats store and remember the truck doing household trips.

Noeline Pinn Yes, thank you. You are correct. He had an earlier truck, a Bedford, that I know of, and he did a two-day trip right around Lake Brunner for many years, reducing that to Ruru and back by the time I went with him about 1943. I was only thre… See more

Remember the shop well - Mr and Mrs Ellis owned the shop when I was growing up
Kathleen Ranger
Helen O'Dea Memories went up to get the bread once, our cat used to follow and wait on Bank's fence.
Helen O'Dea
Kathleen Ranger that’s exactly what I remember going to get - the fresh bread but I would eat it hollow by the time I got home - so yummy !
Mary Moffitt
Helen O'Dea They probably bought it from Cliff and Molly, but I thought the woman was Mrs Everest. Perhaps I was not listening properly, as I was not living there at the time.
