DescriptionHome-made concrete walls temporarily protect these properties at Twelve Mile Bluff, north of Greymouth, which were built on a narrow strip of land between the road (SH6) and the sea.

Remember them very well from my childhood and teen years in the Wairarapa. Ours however were much more complex, with a copper boiler to the left fired by wood or coal and three wringers to get rid of excess water. There were individual drains and fresh water taps for all to ensure a plentiful supply of clean water. My mother hated the system having come from "civilised" central Timaru and got rid of it as soon as she could.
