Zooming in on the hotel sign in top pic (in Recollect), you can clearly see W Neame. Walter Neame was the publican at the Otira Gorge Hotel from late 1923 until around the middle of 1924, which nicely narrows down when the photo was taken. You can see it at right in the top photo showing Barrack Creek in left background. It replaced the late 1880s two-storeyed hotel which burnt down in June 1916. Then, in turn, this one was destroyed by fire in January 1941. Folklore says it was the first hotel in the area to have separate toilet doors labelled “Ladies”, and “Gentlemen “. The fact that they led into the same toilet was a minor consideration
