DescriptionSection and plan of North-west and South East mines in Garvey Creek. They were developed by State Coal Mines from 1948 initially, but were abandoned in the early 50's and later taken over by private parties. I am unable to find any reason for abandonment but suspect that an outbreak of fire may have been the cause. I think these plans are summary plans referenced by W Sara when coal mines wee catalogue in the 70s
The mines were given a letter and number code reference which related to the inch to mile (nzms1) map it plotted on

He worked for nz geological survey .He wrote reports the earliest I can find from 1949 so was no spring chicken

My dad Bob Griffin worked at Garveys left in 60’s by a fire breaking out I think
