DescriptionThe Wallsend colliery had two periods of operation during 58 years of production.
The first era between 1876 and 1890 ended when a depression, coupled with industrial action, resulted in the mine’s premature closure.
Under new ownership in 1927, Wallsend was reopened after the flooded workings were drained.
The mine was taken over by the state in 1943.
Wallsend continued producing its high quality bituminous deposit until production finally ceased on 19 February 1960,
Two shafts plunged into Wallsend’s workings, the deepest being between 670 feet and 14 ft in diameter. These shafts were
sealed in April 1960. A total of 1,781,870 tons of coal was produced from Wallsend. The operation was a valuable contributor to the early prosperity of the district.Date of Photo1906Map^[1]ContributorTony Kokshoorn

Gavin a very much underrated mine from my understanding of the era many men worked between the state pits of Brunner Wallsend and Dobson many tales told of the vertical plunge into the darkness and league players being carried in with injuries sustained on Sunday at football to get compo produced a huge amount of high quality coal and it is really hard to imagine where it all happened now

my father Ted Molloy carted coal from the mine , then I took over from him , went down the the mine before it closed , very scary but interesting .
