Hartismere House was built for Edmund Wickes (1836-1913) by Mr Augustus Stratford Henniker. Edmund’s daughter Daisy later married Augustus at St. Mary’s Church Timaru in 1902.

After their marriage Daisy and her husband Augustus lived in Oamaru.However his health deteriorated. In 1905 Augustus was living in a convalescent home in Cashmere Hills, Lyttleton.He spent a period of time at Hanmer Springs prior to returning to England in 1906 and ultimately France. Augustus died in December 1906 in the South of France.
Daisy returned to Hartismere,and newspaper articles of the time tell of the social and fund raising activities hosted by Daisy including a garden party at Hartismere for the Govenor in 1910. Edmund died at Hartismere in 1913 and the property was sold by Daisy in 1915. Daisy sold the house so she could go to England to undertake work tending to sick and wounded soldiers who were fighting during WW1.By 1928 Daisy was the Matron at the Kirkpatrick Masonic Institute for female orphans at Nelson. She died in Hawera,Taranaki in 1936 and is buried with her parents in the Greymouth Cemetery.

My great Aunt Daisy was an incredible woman well ahead of her time
She was a stenographer in the Greymouth Court house so that is probably where she met her husband the Judge
