Brass bands were an important social feature of those times. Usually sited in working class townships (eg Granity) and peopled with working class members, especially miners. (Founders were often miners from the North of England.)

Almost every small town on the West Coast had at least one brass band. In the Inangahua, we had the Blacks Point Brass Band, and down the road, in town, the renowned Reefton City Band

I wonder if the new instruments were because brass bands all changed from continental (A=435Hz) to concert pitch (A=440Hz)? Some instruments had the length of their tubing altered, but they were all eventually replaced with new ones built for the standardized pitch. Must've been a huge expense for the bands.

Our father Clarence waters was brought up by Thomas neilson who died when. He was 42 in 1925. . I do not know Thomas,s dob or dod.

I think E Franklin would be Everard Franklin, who later conducted the band. He also conducted the Wellington Municipal Tramways Band in later years, late 1940s and eaarly 1950s. That's if i am correct.
