George was born George Ernest August Schaper in Hannover, Germany in 1872. He emigrated to Australia in 1895 and then to New Zealand in 1901. His name was changed from Schaper to Schafer when he entered New Zealand and was probably caused by a pronunciation misunderstanding by the shipping clerk.
