DescriptionWhile I've been trawling online records for info on family members I've found there's a couple of lesser known tiny cemeteries which, apparently have few headstones but many more bodies, due to earthquakes that destroyed whatever was above ground. One is the Lyell Cemetery in Buller Gorge and I found this gobsmacking story of a man who was clearly a psychopath and horribly murdered at least 2 individuals that they know of. One of his victims David Quinlivan was put to rest here. It's quite a story!

Recommend reading “The Laundress of the Lyell” a fabulous well researched book detailing this murder (and her involvement in it!) The book also details the lives of many others living in Lyell at that time. Read it and then visit go visit Lyell again and all the sites mentioned in the book. It’s quite an experience!
