I didn't realise that NZ had another centre rail 'fell engine' design....like the one that was at Remutaka Incline near Featherston.

Bruce Carey as a young boy dad who had his steam ticket showed me the carriage that housed the unit for the centre rail and then we went up on the jigger from the station to the top

John Armstrong at Featherston the little steam museum has a fell engine and can turn it over with electric motors so that you see all the parts moving. It is a fascinating and apparently quite uncommon design. Not sure of the gradient of the Wairarapa side of the incline but it sure is a fast ride down the 6 km on a mountain bike.
