A vivid childhood memory of my mother's was when the family came from Cornwall to Waiuta when she was a young child; at one point the snow was so deep all passengers had to disembark and the men helped the driver and co-driver and poor horses push through the drifts ... I always thought it amazing that Mum went from that beginning in NZ to seeing man land on the moon in her lifetime.

Curious about the location as there is pastoral fencing on the left-hand side ?? and what looks like a telephone line on the right. The upper Otira river should be there.? there is very little vegetation.

If it's west coast bound it is not the Otira section. The mountains in the distance would be on the coast. Because of the distant mountains assuming it is heading west and there of no creek, river or stream, my guess would be the Porters Pass.

I have seen this before titled as Starvation gully which is between Porters Pass summit and Lake Lyndon. Note the fence posts. I have never seen an Arthurs Pass photo with fence posts.
