DescriptionStores were conveyed initially by bullock drays to the Taramakau River mouth and be packed upriver by canoes to the Hohonu River junction and from there by pack horses to Greenstone. By October 1864 there were 40 horses working between Grey and Taramakau, either packing stores or carrying passengers. A two-horse American wagon, along with the bullock drays, also carried travellers and parcels. By December 1864 there were five stores doing business at Greymouth and these in turn supplied Greenstone and the two grog shanties and three stores at Taramakau.
The beginning of the gold rush was about to take place, bringing with it not only gold and security for the miners, but even more financial gain for the storekeepers, publicans and other businessmen who supplied goods and services to Greenstone via the Taramakau.Map^[1]ContributorTony Kokshoorn

Good to see "The Gatekeeper" and his trusty push bike.

I remember those days. Especially the day the gatekeeper forgot to shut the gates and I was a passenger in a car on the bridge and a train entered on the other end. Panic panic but luckily for us the train backed off and a flustered bike rider got the gates shut!

This would be at the Southern end. The gate keepers hut beside the railcar. The gate keeper can also be seen. Set to bike down the other end of the bridge to let the road traffic through.
