During the 1960s, Westland’s Golden Era, which was sustained by extraction industries, was coming to an end. Storm clouds were gathering, with tough times ahead for the West Coast of the Southern Alps. Blackball and Dobson coal mines closed, followed by Rewanui Liverpool No.3 in 1984 and many private coal mines. The Forestry Service stopped supplying native timber from the vast and seemingly endless supply of logs from our rainforests. Government restructuring in the 1980s saw thousands of jobs go from the Railways, Forestry, Ministry of Works, Post and Telegraph departments, and more coal mines. Our biggest export was now our people in search of work elsewhere throughout New Zealand and overseas.
