ADDISON'S.

ADDISON'S is often called Addison's Flat. It lies about eight miles to the south of Westport by road, and is about ten miles from Charleston. It forms part of the Wareatea South riding of the county of Buller, is in the electorate of Buller, and in the provincial district of Nelson. Gold was discovered at Addison's Flat in May, 1867. Since then the industry has been continued with varying success, and several claims are still worked. It is said that in the heyday, of the rush between three thousand and four thousand men were gold digging in the vicinity. Apart from private houses, the township consists of two hotels, a store, a blacksmith's shop, a bakery, a public school, and a Roman Catholic church. At the local post office, money order business is attended to, and there is a telephone bureau. The Okari river passes the township, and in the ranges to the south-east are the Buckland Peaks, 3,273 feet high. A good deal of fanning is carried on in the locality. The one and only “Dublin “ Prince. As you know Coast famous for nicknames. Wish I knew history about how he got Dublin. For instance my fathers nickname was “The Count” that related to his aversion to work

Bede Brown Dad reckoned it was his middle name - so I checked on Ancestry. It stems from Jerry's mother's Smith line. Her father was born in Dublin in 1835 and several of Jerry's uncles all born in NZ, had Dublin as a middle name. So there you go....a take on the Irish naming tradition. But Johnny Prince would know anyway.

Kay Walsh That is interesting and most proberly right. For instance my real first name is Brian, but my mothers brother was Brian Ryan from whom’s collection the photo came, so in keeping with what seemed to be an Irish quirk, I was referred to as Bede which is actually my given middle name.

Dad, Eddie Walsh, remembers Jerry Prince. Dad was walking down Domett St in Westport when he was a boy and Jerry yelled out to give him a hand rounding up some cows and moving them to a paddock arnd the cnr. Dad got a bob for helping him. Felt quite flush.

About 20 years ago I saw, an AA road sign saying Addisons Flat Cemetery beacause I was interested in old cemeteries I climbed a locked farmer's gate and found the area that had the cemetery. There was, a billboard with the history of the place. I think I can remember seeing where some of the buildingss had been. What I found interesting was nost of the graves had small rocks heaped on them, also holes in the ground we had to qatch jut for. It's a shame its shut off from the public & allowed to dereriate

During the 1930s Depression, our dad, Gus Rosanowski , worked on a Relief Scheme at Addison's Flat, turning over old old mine workings. As I understand it, they were paid a basic subsistence allowance and could keep any gold found to top it up. ( Not huge amounts found he said.)

I worked with Owen Prince in the Escarpment mine at Denniston and one day I was trucking off Les Warren and Sparrow sparkes and Owen was putting up a prop and the place fell in on him , Les Warren saved his life that day by digging him out.

John Green Owen was my grandfather and I remember seeing him not long after that accident, he was very lucky to have such great mates who dug him out.
