Patrick McCarthy, Service No. 62363, was born on the 18 October 1880 at Brighton, Tiromoana, Buller. He was the son of Patrick McCarthy, miner and Margaret McCarthy nee O'Connor.At the time of enlistment he was employed as a butcher and his next of kin was listed as his sister Miss A. W. McCarthy of New Plymouth..

Following the war Patrick married Annie Whelan in Auckland in 1921.

Patrick was the brother of James McCarthy (39479).

Quote from notes: Brian (son) and Maureen (daughter) McCarthy

"Most records are missing from the Military File. Family believe he had meningitis at Trentham Military Camp which left him with a collapsed lung. Lots of men died there; family were told he was the only survivor in his hut."

Certificate of Leave in lieu of discharge No. 4989 District Medical Board, Cambridge. Signed Trentham 21 February 1918.

He spent some time in the Cambridge Sanatorium.

After the war he had a butchery business in Te Kauwhata till late 1930. Then he moved to Frankton Junction. He also spent time on Bailey Ward, Waikato Hospital.

Eventually he received a temporary War Pension, for which he went before the Pensions Board every year until the War pension was finally made permanent about the 1950s."
Margaret Atkinson
Annie Whelan was the sister of Mary Whelan who married John Curlie Atkinson. The Whelan's lived in Kumara, Annie was a nurse at the Kumara Hospital before going to Auckland
