Lyell - gold first discovered by a Maori Eparara, or Simon, late 1862, 29 miles north of Reefton, when food supplies ran low the diggers there had to exist on a kind of cake made by the miners called 'damper', this was made from flour and water and baked in the hot ashes of a campfire, and a steady diet of this for many days or even weeks was just another obstacle to contend with in the search for the precious metal, rich alluvial gold, which is gold found with water, worn, sand and gravel, when the quartz era began about 1869 they began prospecting and mining for the high quality ore of the reef leaders.

Damper is still very popular here when outdoor camping in Australia. Nice to sit outside by the camp fire waiting for the damper to be cooked in the camp oven on hot coals.
