By: William Gray8th May 2022 10:31AMThe Vessel loading timber is the Australian vessel MERNOO, At that time owned by the Australian Co Melbourne Steamship Co. the MERNOO traded in here from 1930 to 1935, always loading timber for either Melbourne or Sydney. On the 4th of March 1935 while entering Greymouth, she grazed the South Tiphead after berthing an inspection was made which disclosed damage to the propeller, the MERNOO was then loaded in the forward hold to lift the propeller clear of the water to enable repairs to be carried out. Later on she was converted to a cable layer, before returning to trading again, after being sold the MERNOO traded for a short time before being scrapped in the late nineteen fifties. There is some doubt about the date with the photograph, i think its sometime in the 1930,s not the 1920,s, but there again it can be hard to find dates for older photographs, you often see it with Postcards, where is no date on them.
