An old house in Runanga will be demolished to allow the Grey District Council to divert a flood prone creek that regularly devastates neighbouring homes. There have been problems with Raleigh Creek since the township was created a century ago.
This week the council announced its intention to buy the house on Ranfurly Street. It will enable the council to divert the creek through that property and, using easements now in place, take out a 90 degree bend that causes the flooding.
Butcher Ray Jones welcomed the move. The most recent flood was in June when the butchery, store and about 12 houses went under water. "Twenty years ago I carried women out, chest deep in water. It was only inches away from other Ranfurly Street homes. Grey District Mayor Tony Kokshoorn visited the site. "We will purchase the house on the corner and straighten the creek. Work would progress as soon as possible", he said. Mr Kokshoorn said the purchase of the house still needed to be approved at next month's council meeting. "Even if I don't get approval Ray Jones, and I will buy it." The final cost of the project was 750,000 Dollars.

Anna Anderson i moved to runanga in 2016 and it was still being worked on then. Or was it a different flood?
