What really makes this a beautiful building is its design and situation located next to Speights Alehouse. It gives the town a character.

My brother & sister in law had that pub for a long time. Pat & Peggy Smith. Scotty Thomson was one of the bar-men. A guy called Herb boarded there & was a guard in the railways. Oh the lovely memories of this place, so please don't pull it down. Paul & Cliff Smith lived there with Pat & Peggy so I bet they can tell some stories??

I was in The Royal on the evening of 23rd May 1968. Had quite a few with visiting friends. At home at 5.25am the next morning, I was thrown out of bed by the Inangahua earthquake and, in a panic, I attempted to get out the door only to find I was in the wardrobe. Wrong door.
