Lawrence Inksker joined James Ring according to the National Library in 1924 and James Ring retired in 1939 and presumably Lawrence carried on the business there after. Yes, I lived in Blaketown and knew them all. Warren was the same era as me.

I think this occasion was a centenary of Methodism. - Maybe on the West Coast or in New Zealand. I remember seeing that commemorative tableau structure on the right hand side of the church at the time. It must have been in the early sixties as I would have been to young to remember if it was the 50’s. If I have the viewing angle correct I suspect it is after the steeple was removed from St Patrick’s as I think that would have been visible otherwise.

Yes Fay Elva (my mum) was very involved with the Methodist and later United churches in both Hokitika and Greymouth. And when I was a PA teacher at Cobden that church had an excellent Bible Class that included young workers and we ran a coffee club, called 'the Sign of the Fish' in the hall on a Friday night that attracted locals from off the street.

This is the celebration of 100yrs. Methodism in Greymouth, 1965. The display on the right has a 2 cutouts painted by Rev. Syd. Spindler. One shows Rev. Harper, the first Minister in Greymouth astride a horse riding up from Hokitika. The other is a cutout of John Wesley. You will need to zoom in to recognise these items.

The church looks in such great condition then, such a shame that it succumbed to the Inangahua quake just 3 years later; although I guess that took care of what would have been difficult decisions for the subsequent Union Parish.
Another memory I have from much the same time was an exhibition of Toss Wollaston’s in the Wesley Hall. It included some of what became some of his signature sunset on the Grey River paintings. My guess is that not a lot of them sold to Coasters, who on the whole didn’t seem to think that art and being the Rawleigh’s man went together.
