DescriptionAlthough referred to as the “Mawhera Pa”, it was actually a small, nondescript village with no palisades, carvings or grand buildings. The small cluster of whare and whata (food stores) were nestled on the sloping ground that once extended from the riverbank, rising up past the site now occupied by the railway yards, Fresh Choice and The Warehouse. Later they moved farther back up on the rise.If you look up the Motel drive,the back unit which can just be seen,was where Werita Tainui's hut was. The Motel misses the Barber and doubtless they moved when European development altered the hillside and allowed the wind to come through their old settlement? At least when you live in that area,it doesn't take rocket science to dodge the Barber.

Peter Robertson I thought the move was because of the burial, later uncovered by quarrying?
