Whenever I have friends visit who have never been here I show the the flood levels on the back of the Courthouse

In 1890 my Great Great Grandfather Edmund Wickes petitioned the government to build a flood wall to protect Greymouth from 100 year floods which kept happening
They lived in Arney Street originally so suffered the ravages of floods many times
Interestingly it took until 1990 for the flood wall to be in place
Over the 70’s and 80’s I worked in central Greymouth and endured many floods at my work places including the two big ones in 1988

Would be good to know if this was the first in May 1988 or the second in September 1988. The second one peaked for around 11 hours!
