“The Waimate to Christchurch cycle race of 145 miles, was held today with 68 starters. Three Hokitika men put up excellent performances. S G Havill finished second in 7 hours, 11 minutes, his cousin J J Havill finished third and W R Gooch sixth. The winner was B Briggs of New Brighton 7 hours and 11 minutes. The fastest time went to H G Watson of Christchurch in 6 hours 23 minutes”.
There were 42 finishers.

This was a “golden age” for Hokitika cycling. Father Steve and cousin Jack rode in several classic road races. They rode the round the mountain in Taranaki at least once. Bill Gooch was also very active at that time.

Imagine it, no carbon fibre frames, heavy wheels, leather seat, certainly not 27 gears, no clips on the pedals or padded shorts, helmets not a thing until 1970's. These guys were amazing.
