Went into a Museum in Ballerat a few years ago, while on holiday, met a guy from the Delleca family. When I told I,d worked for Dellecas Postie Fashions for years, before shifting over here, we had quite a long chat.It .Good to meet home connections. He was the Delleca family connection thet stayed over here.

This is exactly what my Grandfather and Grandmother did,Samuel and Mary Provis gold mined at Ballarat.They moved over to Inangahua (Landing) he mined for gold.

Same with my grandparents Jack & Ellen (Nell) Askew - I wonder if there was a concerted push to get miners from Ballarat to go - interesting that they all went to Reefton and/or Globe Hill mine. I have never been able to find shipping records for the Askews (about 1910/11 I think) - anyone else had any luck?

Barbara Wilson miners took themselves where the next big discovery was, the authorities had little choice and it was generally in hurried fashion to get a good claim (the "rush"). There were so many coming from Bendigo and Ballarat plus across the Globe firstly to the Otago goldfields that passengers in steerage were not recorded in the papers. Many in Otago then moved on from Otago to the West Coast, many on foot. So it is difficult to pinpoint who was where when until they started applying for claims and water rights. Many left any dependants, if they had them, behind, some never reunited.

Barbara Wilson the goldfields became silent by the 1920s so with the peak being in the 1850s but the Ballarat Museum has this page with lots of interesting information, given they were still finding large nuggets through to 1887 I imagine that prospectors continued their quest until the next gold rush ... https://www.ballarathistory.com/copy-of-rrrrrrrr

Grandparents and eldest son went, 3 more children born at Globe Hill including my mother (1913) but grandma died in 1918 from Spanish flu. Eventually the 'kids' sent back to Aust to be reared by paternal aunts. Grandfather stayed there and died in Reefton Hosp in 1936. Luckily I have photos. Some on this Facebook page
