It is an invoice. I have old invoices from Brown & McGrath too. (Mine from 1905) Perry & Hegan had sawmills and logging crews back in the days when horses were used. One mill was at Pine Creek, Takutai, a little south of the Hokitika River, and the bush workings were on part of the area subsequently mined by the Rimu gold dredge. Another mill was at South Spit even closer to Hokitika on the Hokitika Borough boundary. Some of the logs for this mill were barged down Mahinapua Creek. (Perry also owned other mills elsewhere)

The Jellie in that business was Dave Jellie. I remember his wife Lil but not him. I know their son Gary Jellie and a good friend lives in what was once the Jellie home a little north of Hokitika.

I have 3 X receipts from 1899 through to 1904 I think it is. Shows transition of different owners/partnerships at same address.

Dave Lyes There must be quite a few invoices that George Perry paid that survived. The most recent I have is 1912. I think I bought half a dozen invoices off a Canterbury based friend at least a decade ago but he had a swag of them at the time.

Glenn Johnston it's great to hear so many of any type of document from that period survive. Mine came simply from TradeMe for almost nothing. Postage was dearer.

21 shillings in a guinea. Decimal currency came in when I was 9 years old. Farthings were out of circulation by then but I remember half pennies. There were two farthings in a half penny. Most kids born post 2000 would know little of pre decimal coinage.

Clare Pierson I carry in my wallet a farthing, halfpenny, penny (1946) year I was born threepence sixpence shilling florin, and a half-crown to show the younger generation (grandchildren etc) what we had before 1966
