John Armstrong yes, John, wearing a hat was a very practical thing for them, Most people walked everywhere in those days, in all weathers. People's footwear, even the women, wore shoes that were much like boots, and had heel and toe plates, sometimes hobnails.

Mahinapua Creek was reserved to protect the whitebait fishery and in 1964 complete closure was instigated. A friend from Cobden told me that when she was a child, her parents and a friend dyed all their whitebait nets black, before the season started. She thought this was normal practice. Her dad was a ganger in a bridge maintenance gang and his best mate also worked in the same gang for the railways. Every year, at that right time of the year, planned maintenance took place on the railway bridge over the Mahinapua. A string line was set up to a bell and operated by a lookout. The lookout's job was to keep an eye out for a fisheries officer, as Ag & Fish or whatever their name was in those days, had whitebait fishing compliance as part of their role. Kerosine tins of whitebait were brought home. In 1987, Ag&Fish were very happy to hand over the compliance duties to DoC and have them be part of the DoC Act 1987. I believe they, Ag & Fish, upped sticks and left the Coast not long after.
