Joe Grimmond had a Mill just to the right of this photo (now part of my parents farm). Mr and Mrs Muir, lived on the terrace, south east of the bridge, by about 400m. Another property site also owned by my parents.

Stephen Foster maybe Mrs Muir?.....although she hasnt biked far if it is - or maybe they were headed to the famous Totara swimming hole???? Thats certainly not Joe Grimmond as he was a tall man.

Yes there was a sawmill near the Totara River with a branch tramway connecting to a railway siding at Papakamahi after the railway to Ross opened. It was initially Grimmond's mill and then seems to have been owned by Wickes and Peebles unless the Wickes and Peebles mill was a different mill close by or on the site of the former mill? The Grimmond sawmill was established about 1885. The name change from Grimmond's to Wickes & Peebles occurred in the early C20th.

Was this an earlier bridge ? My memory of Totora was a steep descent onto the bridge from Hokitika end but straight road. Kevin O'Regan
