ALBUM - The Greymouth Hospital . 1866 - 2020.

DescriptionThe original Greymouth Hospital opened its doors to the sick and injured in 1866 on the corner of Tainui and Guinness street where the Post Office stood. In 1875 a new Hospital was established in the area of upper High street and Water Walk road. This structure was replaced on the same site by a concrete and brick building in 1897 with many additions through to the old people's home (Tasman) in 1925 and the red brick Nurses Home in 1927. The Inangahua earthquake of 1967 made the hospital unsafe so another substantial hospital was constructed and completed in 1969. In 2008 after rumours of closure the process of replacing the now ageing and not up to seismic requirements hospital began with much Government lobbying which concluded with construction of the 120 Million Dollar new facility on the Water Walk road site today. The hospital rebuild following the Inangahua earthquake was built in stages and was not all completed until 1982. The operating theatre, outpatients and the first four wards were being used when I started my nursing training in 1975. The laboratory, then the new McBrearty ward which then became the acute psychiatric ward when it moved from Seaview Hospital in the 1990's.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I understand it was called The Grey River Hospital, reflecting a term for the town often used in Greymouth's early history.

The maternity hospital was Rewa and was at the beginning of Shakespeare Street down at Alexander Street end.
My Mother was born at Rewa May 1924.

When my friends from school came to see me they had to stay outside the open window as no children allowed to visit.. clear memories of rolling down the ramp by the doorway, obscured at the right side of the building, either Saltzman or Obrien ward.. mixed male and female) in tiny little armchair with coasters (wheels) on them.. fab memories
