Fire fighting, normally thought of as a mans job has been taken over by women in Dobson.Brunner Fire Brigade officials are only too happy to have women on daytime duties as the menfolk are out of town at their various workplaces.

The photo date is not earlier than July 1965. Landrovers were regarded as commercial vehicles in those days and waited until a year after cars to get their new plates.

Catherine Moffitt Rowlands Yes, I think it must have been late sixties or more likely earlier seventies. I remember typing a letter for Alf who was training the women. Others will know much more that I do, but the letter was to the national fire chief to try to get the women recognised officially. They were refused.
The important thing was that the women were not committed to a workplace and were able to get the fire appliance to the site of a fire much more quickly than the men who were all volunteers and had to quit work to get to the fire station. Involving the women meant that the engine could be at the fire much sooner, and the men could go directly to the fire.
If there before the men, the women had been trained to use the hose, and two of them together were able to manage it safely.
These women were real enthusiasts.

I think the fire station is opposite our house.
