Wow, that brings back memories. I was living there at that time. Otira was really thriving with the steam engines transporting coal, timber, cement and stock for starters Was a lot of activity then. There a surface gang for the track, bridge gang which I was a part of, my cousin Colleen who was the district nurse, a plumber, guessing about 6 engine crews, guards, wagon repair team, ladies running the refreshment rooms, the local police, post office, shop, traction gang who looked after all the overhead gear for the trams, Snow Mckenzie the publician who looked after us, M.O.W. gang, and many more service groups. It was buzzing. There were houses on both sides of the road full of families. Was a great era looking back. The part that really stood out for me looking back was the sound of the steam engines echoing around the mountains, the driver giving the odd wheelie by opening it up the throttle . Shooting more or less at the back door for those that wanted it, climbing the tops in a couple of hrs. Was great.
