After speaking with a fellow Coaster about this sad happening, she told me a story about their son Jack and his friend by the name of Sparks, who were in the rear of the car at the time of the accident.
On another occasion Jack and his friend, Sparks, were on a train returning from a fireworks display in Hokitika when somewhere along the journey Jack pulled the emergency cord, bringing the whole train to a shuddering stop. Naturally the guard investigated and severly spoke to Jack, asking why he pulled the cord. Jacks apparent reply was that "The train told Sparkie that it has a loose front wheel". According to my friend Jack was put off the train in the middle of nowhere but as it moved off he managed to climb aboard again, reaching Greymouth very cold indeed. Knowing Jack from later working with him I can fully understand him getting up to this prank.
