DescriptionSurveyor and Resident Engineer for Westland Mr. George Dobson, brother to Arthur Dudley Dobson, who was murdered by Bushrangers in the Brunner Gorge on the 28th May, 1866 at the age of twenty-five years old. His body was found in early July and buried at Karoro Cemetery. The Burgess Gang were later executed for the murder of five men on the Maungatapu Saddle.ContributorThomas Fairweather

Who killed George Dobson ?? The incontestable answer lies in the charge for the murder against JImmy Murray - with the Maungatapu murders Informer, Thomas Sullivan, as the star witness against him. What Sullivan didn't count on was the cast-iron alibi that Murray was at tea at a Greymouth hotel at the very time of Dobson's disappearance. This was strongly testified by the waitress and her mother. So, why did Sullivan give false evidence (the charge was thrown out) if he was not implicated in Dobson's murder ??
