An aeroplane was a rare thing. I remember in the late 50s early 60s if mum heard a plane in the Maruia valley she would run out and wave a nappy or the tablecloth. She said it was incase they were lost. Thinking now, how did that help the 'Lost pilot' find his way? At least he new he was above friendly territory

My late father in law George Gibson had a joyride which was his first ever flight in The Southern Cross at Ikamatua.

A 14 year old John O’Malley went for a ride with Smith on this visit to Ikamatua, and it is what inspired him to join the airforce some years later during WWII. There is another photo in existence with at least a couple of the O’Malley brothers in it, it featured once in “The way we were” pages of the Women’s Weekly in the early 1990’s.
