Kevin Sheehan I watched Wayne Pratt fly in with a Rimu log, with this machine, to a skid near Kumara Junction, and carefully stand the log on it's butt, then dropped down a little to take the weight off the strop, and the log stood perfectly upright. Great skill, not noticed by many of the visiting crowd though. Had the pleasure of taking him and the Russian engineers through the mill at Ruatapu, where the logs they flew out, were cut up. Late 2001, may have been the last lift of Rimu, from crown forests, on the Coast.
Kevin Sheehan
Chris Windley there were a number of us that worked felling for the machine or as stroppers in the 90's when it first started. Have to take my hat off to the stroppers as working under it in the down draft wouldn't have been pleasant. The late Grant Ward was the pilot then.

Richard Currie yes it does

The Mil 17 pictured was the 2nd of two helicopters operated by this company. The other a Mil 8 which looked near identical.
Joy Meyer
Years ago there was an Mil8 helecopter working up Blue Spur taking the Rimu out. We were coming back down after getting firewood and had to park up as it was landing. My 2 boys went over to the helicopter and the guys asked them if they wanted to look inside. They were told about the helicopter and how they get the logs etc. I had 2 very excited boys who thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I think there were 2 choppers but one crashed landed killing the workers on board

Malcolm Gollan
I'm sure that was a challenge for the NZ technicians to keep it in the air. Not a lot of familiarity here I wouldn't have thought.
Paul Heal
I've got some video footage of it operating in the Mackley area.

My late Mum cooked for the Russian crews in Dr Bryant's old house on the corner of Brittan and Stafford st in Hokitika. The Russians love vodka and Grapes, and they do not eat pumpkin as in Russia it's feed to cows.
