Westland Acclimatisation District fishing licence.

DescriptionI came across this fifty year old Westland Acclimatisation District fishing licence when hunting through old documents. It was back when I was still at High School and would have been just the third fishing licence I ever bought having started trout fishing in 1970.

Note the price; just one dollar for the season. Alan Pegley, a keen fisherman, who owned the Sports Depot in Hokitika has issued the licence. Back then I only fished the Hokitika River as transport was by pushbike. It was usually chasing sea run browns in the estuary or resident fish further upstream as far as the Kaniere River. Heather Newby $145 for an adult, $29 for Juniors (12-17 yrs).

I don't know, but a dollar was worth a lot more then.

Heather Newby A local area residence adult whole season licence is $116 or for the whole country excluding Taupo $145. There are various permutations that can change the fees. At times in the past I've bought the Taupo licences and day licences.

Kevin Oregan No honorary rangers in Whataroa in those days? Down at Hari Hari in 1978 when I worked there some people fished for trout with gelignite & nets. You very likely know those I'm talking about. One regular of the Totara Flat pub when I used to drink there in the late 70's had a hand and part of his forearm missing reputedly from an accident "blowing" trout. (I could produce the name but won't as it is only hearsay though others have vowed this is true)

I’ve no problem with licensing but as one of my mates from Wyoming said when he was over here “It’s madness that NZ residents pay so much. You should be charging us overseas visitors more to subsidise cheaper licences for you guys! It’s your country!”
