Sister Julie was an orphan & arrived in NZ from Poland as one of 700+ child Refugees & lived in Pahiatua camp 1944.She became a Nun because the Catholic church helped bring her up. Later she left the church & taught at various schools.She in part had a sad life always looking for family.She never really knew how old she was & had no birthday, I spent time with her during her last 25 yr She just loved music & was grateful to NZ for taking her fellow Polish refugee children in during the War. Martin Ellis. Good man. Had a sense of humour unlike some of them . Pat McGrath we had a name for but I won’t repeat. She had come from teaching in Nauru. Always went on about it

Pam Englefield-Absolum and I can also tell you we did not call Martin Ellis ‘Martin’ either. It was Mr Ellis. He was a good bloke but he could swing a cane. Luckily I never copped it but a few in my class did and said it hurt

Oh dear. I remember teaching over at Marist and you boys had to take your shoes off to enter and keep the polished floor clean. Friday’s class required air freshener!

Pam Englefield-Absolum yes and I could name the person who always had stinking feet too but once again I won’t. They stunk on Monday morning and they still stunk on Friday afternoon
